Hey gang,

So, I wanted to open this thread for a discussion of who we should help. We kind of need to make this decision quickly...it's not something we can just pop in and say "hey! we're here to take everyone's pictures!" It's going to have to be organized and planned well in advance.

All of the videos that I've watched on this site basically have a central location at the facility that essentially gets converted into a photo studio. So, where should we go?

I've had the following ideas:

Ronald McDonald House
CHKD (pick a wing?)
A local battered women's shelter
A local shelter for homeless families
A breast cancer survivors group(bring out the beautiful again...attention, makeup, loving the camera, etc...)
A nursing home of some sort

What I think we should focus on....my vision....my reason for joining this:

I want to take someone who is having a rough go of it and make them the most important person on the planet for the time they're with us. Let's say we do a women's shelter for example....think of what these people have been through....what their lives have been.....

Now...for one day....they get to put that aside and be the sole focus of our day. We make them beautiful (make-up, hair). We chat them up. We talk to them. We learn their stories. Then the shooters....we make them rock stars....we give them everything we give a model who's shooting for the portfolio that's going to take her to the next level. We find out what they want and we make sure that they get it but we give them something extra....maybe something they didn't see in themselves or hadn't seen in a long time.........

These are just my off the cuff thoughts....I want us to *crush* this when the 12th comes....but we've gotta get rolling.

BTW - forgot to add this: My wife works in medicine and if we want to do the breast cancer, chkd, or nursing home route she has contacts in virtually all of them. Additionally, she's volunteered to come along on the 12th to assist any of us that need it. She's not an mua or a tog but she's willing to be on hand to play gofer for whatever we need. Might be something for other's to consider....having a couple of people on hand to act as assistants for whoever might need one. Good way to bring SO's into the spirit of the day as well.
My mother in law has a patient (she's a nurse) or used to work with this lady...something like that... who is struggling with a brain tumor, and her husband has lost his job, and there once honor roll kids are now failing because of everything. I thought a great family photo might be something worth looking into.

I'm gonna double check with some ladies who do make up and another hair stylist I know to see if they want to help out.
While I appreciate the sentiment and the struggles this one particular family is going through I think that one photographer would be more than capable of giving them the kind of gift that this project is offering. As a group of people I think we have the capacity to serve a much larger good. If we have a full-on crew...a few togs, a couple of hair people, and a couple of mua's we could roll through a good sized group of people like those present in any of the venues that I mentioned above.

I think that if you personally wanted to do something nice for this family you should knock it out of the park for them. But as a group project I think we could make something far larger happen......
Oh yeah I wasn't really intending for the whole shoot to be about this family, just somebody to start with basically and we could add people to the set.

Doable....we'd just need a set and then a way to reach out to enough people to get them there. I dig the CHKD suggestion you made in the other thread a lot more.........people are already there, it's indoors, it's controlled, and I'm sure they have a space we can set up in.
I think a womens shelter would be a great idea. Samaritan House is an option for a contact.

I also feel like a local support group...perhaps Mothers of children who have passed from SIDS or suffered another tragedy and can use a *pick me up* of sorts.

Breast Cancer patients/survivors, YES. How fitting as BC awareness month has just passed....

I am happy to be involved no matter the final decision.

Awesome suggestions....glad to see you here!

Do you have any contacts at Samaritan House?

While I do know someone on the board of Samaritan House, they prefer you go through the *chain of command* so-to-speak;) Here is a link to local charitable organizations and the contacts for them. I do hope this helps and if you would like to set up a time for us all to get together to work up a formal proposal to present, I would be available. Typically, because of discretion issues, organizations do prefer some sort of legit proposal they can consider that highlights everything, and everybody involved before they make a final approval.

Awesome link....instant bookmark. Thanks.

So - we definitely need to crunch down a decision at some point soon then. I hadn't thought of the "red tape" factor either........

Michael....I think we need a timeline....some deadlines......

Discussion of location (date) through (date)
Decision made on (date)
Establish contact and have location locked down and our presence approved by (date)
Final go/no-go and *COMMITMENT* of those that are planning on participating by (date)
Meeting to go over the date on (date)
and then the actual event happens.................

Thoughts all?

I am feeling like we can't really decide on anything until we know who is willing to accept the offer (which organization).

Perhaps a meeting between us is the first step to establish some basics about what each of us can offer, our current schedules (so we can establish a timeframe) and put together a "plan" and then we can start making some calls to find out where the best place is to put our efforts into. I am happy to write up the final proposal and make the calls or visits to the organizations if no one else wants to....

Once we know who is serious about accepting the offer, then, we can pinpoint specifics on all other issues.

Just a thought.

Agreed - there definitely should be a meeting. Here are my thoughts:

I posted up a general board comment asking who was still paying attention to this conversation....no one really responded so I think I know who our core group is going to be.

We should narrow things down to 3 possibilities here on the board and then get together (Panera, Bean There, wherever has wifi in case we need internet access) and make a final decision - primary and alternate. Then we start working with the primary to see if they'd let us in. This needs to happen **soon**. Less than a month till the 12th.

I'm in.

I am available this coming Mon-Thursday best times are before 5pm and will travel anywhere within the 7 cities to meet and formulate the beginning stages of this plan to get this project moving. With notice, I can work just about anything though, so keep me in the know.

Bare with me if I am slow responding this weekend as I will be in DC for a shoot. Will be checking back in the evenings though and always feel free to email as well.
