Ubuntu Help-Portrait is a volunteer photographer movement that has its foundations in Help-Portrait. It is based in Johannesburg South Africa.

It is the largest Help-Portrait group in South Africa and it has given the greatest number of portraits in the global Help-Portrait community.

In 2012, over 16,500 portraits [up from over 13,000 in 2011] were given to people in needy communities. Over 36,000 free portraits have been given in 4 years.

Volunteers based outside of the Johannesburg hub, are also invited to join the Ubuntu Help-Portrait Chapters that focus on volunteers in other cities and towns in South Africa and Swaziland.

Membership of the group and the chapters is open to all photographers and volunteers.

The 2013 edition of the flagship Free Portraits programme will be launched on Thursday, 30 May 2013. Click here to view the details.

The target of 25,000 free portraits that eluded the group two years in a row, is firmly in its sights again!

is there a criteria for nominations? (sorry for all the questions)

Thank you for that prompt Oriel!

If you wish to nominate an organisation, that is most welcome. Just provide a name/contact and number and we will call them up and establish their interest in the project.

The only part of the "system" we try to manage is to keep close track of the total number of portraits! Once we reach 5000 we cannot offer any more portraits...............................unless a very generous sponsor/donation comes along!

How does the locations get chosen, is there a system through which someone could nominate an organisation?

Hi Robyn.

Great question!

Our work group arranges the project through these key tasks:

1] attract photographers and volunteers
2] identify and arrange dates and locations at which the portraits will be taken
3] solicit sponsorship and donations for the cost of printing the portraits

In practice, the photographers and volunteers go out in teams to the shoot locations on the set dates, take the portraits, go home to edit their images if they wish to and then return the digital images to the work group so that we can have them printed. All the images are then printed in bulk.

This year we will also have the new task of mounting the prints on hard board. Once that is done, the mounted prints are ready for delivery.

These details and how the project should unfold during the 4 November to 4 December period will be unpacked for discussion at the launch and we will also send out an explanatory note at that time.

Hope you can join us at the launch!
