Off the wall!

A simple way to create a message and portrait in one frame or have the flexibility to merge them in post.

  • Stuff you may need: large white background wall and dark coloured chalk [or vice versa], wet cloth to clean off the chalk message when you're done!
  • Portrait set-up: ask the subject to write their message on the wall and then pose them next to it and get your all-in-one Message Portrait.
  • Tips and tricks: photograph the wall and the subject separately and also in a single frame to have options in post-production/editing

Old school!

Probably the simplest way to create a Message Portrait. It will have to merged in post.

  • Stuff you may need: notebook paper, preferably blank white sheets, something to write with.
  • Portrait set-up: ask your subject to write their message on a sheet of paper. Photograph them holding their written message and also just on their own. Photograph the written sheet on location too.
  • Tips and tricks: a black/dark coloured marker or felt tip is suggested rather than a fine ball point pen. The thicker the point/nib, the better. Take a few sheets of paper in case your subject needs to re-write their message ;-)  Make a paper plane in advance and ............well, you can try that if you want to ;-)
