Might as well get the ball rolling on this one. If you guys have ideas, post them here. Assuming I can edit my original post, we can keep tabs on outstanding ideas as we discuss.

One idea could be setting up a photo booth and having people take a formal portrait. We would help them find out if they have family in the area, and send the portrait to them along with a letter. Connect families?

RULES:
1. Withhold judgement of ideas
2. Encourage wild and crazy ideas
3. Quantity at this point, quality alter
4. Build on ideas and put it forward
5. Everyone and every idea has equal worth

Thanks for kicking off the thread, Kevin! Can you expand on how we might be able to connect families?

Another idea is to take formal family portraits of underprivileged families - just in time for the holiday season. =) We could either set up somewhere and advertise the location/service, or potentially contact organizations we know and volunteer to go to them (eg, we did a fundraiser a yr ago for a non-profit called Vision House - they provide housing for homeless single mothers and their children - http://www.vision-house.org/)
What about doing portraits of the elderly at an assisted living home? Some of them don't get out much. They could invite family to participate if they're in the area or send a print to family if they have none nearby.

I also like the idea of offering portraits to families of single mothers who are homeless or in halfway homes. Another option to add to that would be taking "beauty shots" of homeless/battered women as a self esteem booster. I could rally up a few people to provide hair/makeup services and make them feel really beautiful.
I'll be student teaching for Fall quarter at an inner city school, not sure which one right now, but most likely somewhere in the Central District. Perfect opportunity to connect with families. I also love the idea of Jamie's.
That would be a great opportunity, Autumn! We could set up a family portrait day at the school. Let us know when you know more.

Great ideas, all! I was wondering, would it be beneficial and feasible for us to meet in person sometime in the next couple of weeks to all meet each other and solidify an idea in person? Are people relatively close to Seattle? I can get as far as Bothell and as south as Tacoma on any given day, given it's late enough in the evening to get over. I work a regular 9-5 type schedule so a weeknight could work for me, or a wkend depending on which day. Just thought I'd throw it out there!
I love that idea!! There are so many stories in those faces.

I think that's a good plan! I live in Seattle near Greenlake and can do an evening meet-up. Anyone else in?

Hello all!! I live and work on the eastside and am off of work around 3 pm on weekdays. Weekends are generally pretty open too. :o)
I already posted this in another thread, but to reiterate: Thursday early evenings areawesome for me, otherwise after 6 PM on any weekday besides Tuesdays. How do your Thursdays look?
Yeah looks like we have 2 threads on the same topic. For the sake of consolidation, please visit the "Meeting Up" thread for the latest on when/where to meet.
More Ideas in the same vein:
- Children and their families at Children's Hospital
- Families who use a food bank (not necessarily at the food bank)
- Families in low-income housing
