Hello everyone -

I spoke with my contact at the IRC and they are *definitely* wanting to participate in the project. Someone will get back to me with more details early next week.

There will likely be between 10-15 families meeting in the Dupont Circle area. There is a park a few blocks away from the IRC office where we can go to shoot.

I'm thinking we would ideally have:
2 or 3 other photographers, besides myself, tops
makeup and styling people
maybe a couple people to hold reflectors or strobes and do printing runs (I can provide one of those, i.e. my fiance)
someone to work on post

I'd like to do formal and, time permitting, informal portraits around whatever park they have there or Dupont Circle. Then I'd like to do post on site and go to CVS and do instant prints. There is a CVS two blocks away from the office that has an insta-print machine that prints at least 4x6 (I called). We'll likely be able to print larger (online, cheaper) and drop prints off at the IRC as the families are required to visit the office periodically.

The International Rescue Committee works with families seeking asylum from various countries around the world. I worked with this organization a few years ago and basically visited with a family from Iraq for a while to help them get acquainted with the U.S. The family was incredibly generous and hard-working but they were having a very rough time of it because of language problems, mostly. I know that these families will be unable to afford a family portrait, even at Sears or some other place like that.

My contact at the IRC tells me that everyone over there is very excited.

So, please let me know if you would like to be involved in this project. Obviously, I don't need scads and scads of people because it is a relatively small event. It seems to me post processing gurus and hair/makeup people will be hard to come by so I'd doubly appreciate interest from those specialists.

Also, if you have studio lights and are interested in this project, please bring that to my attention. It would be awesome to have a fallback plan if it is raining.

Please write to my email: amberture (at) gmail. You can feel free to post to this discussion board but I can't guarantee I'm going to check it frequently and, as you might imagine, we need to finalize details for this very soon.

thanks for reading and take care!

Update:

Thank you to everyone that has written me about this project. If I haven't gotten back to you yet, it's probably just because I don't have anything additional to say at the moment. I'm in contact with people at the IRC and we will be finalizing details soon.

I probably have enough photographers, unless it turns out there are going to be many more families than I thought. What I am still looking for are hair and makeup people! If you can do hair, sign up please - I don't care if you're a professional or not. I feel like hair and makeup put a really nice touch on this event and make people feel like it's really something classy and special.

Hi Amber. I would definitely like to help. I am an amateur photographer. Have a Nikon D90, lenses, SB900 flash, stand and umbrella.
What time are you meeting? I would like to help any way I can.
