The Central Union Mission is hosting their annual Christmas Event,
Operation Christmas Miracle 2009.
This program ensures that underprivileged children throughout the city receive gifts on their wish list for Christmas.
A link to the actual event: missiondc.org/events

We will piggyback The Mission's event by offering family and individual portraits to those attending the event along with men who are in the shelter's year long program.

I am looking for photographers, assistants, lighting, backdrops, laptop with Photoshop and Bridge, 1-2 printers & printing supplies & eggnog for a little photog get-together afterwards. The Mission estimates about 500 kids will come through on Saturday. Of course not all families or kids will take part, but we will have enough to go around. I did a photoshoot on Thanksgiving for The Mission, it was great.
My blog post has a slideshow of that event, you can skip to the bottom third for The Mission's info, if you like :-) Here is the link: LifePhotoBlog

Hear a testimony from one whose life has been touched by Central Union Mission:
http://missiondc.org/stories/ed/

I am working on a meeting prior to the event to have the photographers, assistants and any others interested in helping have a chance to meet, discuss and answer questions. Don't think you have to be an expert photog to help, this is just as good of an opportunity to learn and give at the same time.

This is a great opportunity to give to those less fortunate, I am looking forward to working with all of those who wish to share in the dream of making someone else's Christmas special.

I could also use some people who could help with logistics and organization. Please email me if you think you like to help with this too.

Doug,

I can be there and can either shoot or assist. I am an amateur and can bring:
Nikon D300 with either 17-55/2.8 or 50/1.8
2 Nikon Speedlights: SB800, SB600
Light stand with umbrella (shoot through and bounce)
1 muslin mottled background - black with dark blue, but no background stands - I do have collapsible poles that I use to hang the background

I can also bring my laptop but I do not have a current photoshop release. I pp mainly with Nikon NC2 and have PSE4 for Mac.

Is this of interest?

Hi Dave,
Yes that is great, love to have you join our team! I will provide more finite details over the next couple days. But the general times are 9-4pm is the Mission's event, we will arrive between 7-8am to setup, duration will depend on a few things and we can communicate about these things along the way.
If you are good with us using your laptop may I make a suggestion that you download the current version of Photoshop, its a 30 day trial so we can take advantage of that and download Photo Mechanic too. PM is a great editing program for quick ingestion and visual selection, Adobe Bridge is good to use in the mix. From there we can use PS to edit and print.

This will give us two studio setups, we might be able to have a third one if we someone else comes up with one. Due to the nature of skin color the blue one might be our best bet, and I will look for a neutral color one. For the background stands I will look around if you don't mind using your background pole.

If I missed anything then feel free to let me know.... again great to have you!

Doug, I am fine with bringing my laptop. I am unsure which version of Photoshop you were suggesting I download. I have been on the fence of upgrading to the latest Photoshop elements version and this might provide the incentive. I do have Photomechanic already which I use for ingesting photos and file management/browsing.

I would like to meet with you and the others before the day of the project and I think it would be good to look at the facilities ahead of time.

Hi Dave,
That is great about PM. I was thinking of downloading Photoshop's latest version CS4. I use CS3 on my home machine but I don't know if you can download the older CS3. But CS4 I would guess is similar in the features we would be using. I don't know the first thing about Photoshop Elements so that will be your area of expertise.... Whatever works best for you I am good.
As for meeting outside of the shoot I am good with, but I am trying to coordinate this w/ schedules of the Mission and mine so I will keep in touch. If you email me directly I will send you my private contact info: doug@lttlphotography.com

Doug- I would like to participate. I'm an advanced amateur and I can bring at least one light stand set up with off camera strobe, umbrella and wireless triggers. I can't bring a laptop or background but I can help solicit donations, or try and organize logistics if need be.

Hi Gabe,
Awesome! You are welcome to join us and shoot. Are you interested or experienced in any other task related jobs?
As things unfold I will update the group, but in the meantime feel free to email me directly at doug@lttlphotography.com.

Best regards and welcome to our team,

Doug

Hi Everyone:

This sounds like a great event--- count me in!
I am a portrait photographer and would be happy to assist as a photographer as well as in any other area
where I am needed. I shoot with a D300; SB800 flash, and can also bring my lighting system (two lights),
backdrops, and umbrellas. I think the Central Union Mission provides the perfect opportunity, especially
at this time of year to join otherwise separated familes for a timeless family portrait.
I would be happy to meet prior to the 12th at a central location for all. I am looking forward to hearing everyone's
ideas and discussing how we can all work together to make this happen :-))
I have to say that I would much rather spend the 12th of December touching the lives of those less fortunate than to be at
the mall, standing in long lines just to purchase some commercial item that will be long forgotten about by January.
I hope that many others will decide to join us for such a great cause:-))

Cheers,
Deb

Hey all,

I am a very amateur photographer... I have a Cannon Rebel that shoots on film, so we will not be using that. I can help set up people, and move things around and such. I have a drama practice that morning, so I will not be able to come along until noon or thereafter. I can help tear down as well. I love working with people and have been looking for an opportunity to work with the homeless and less fortunate. I want to help in anyway I can. Please let me know.

Hi Deb,
Super excited to have you join our team of photogs. I am planning a meeting soon, just waiting on one of the companies I contacted to get back to me on Monday before I post. Email me and I will send you my personal contact info. One thing I would like to ask of everyone is that if there are no objections we all will rotate between the various jobs needed during the shoot, shooting, file processing, printing, assisting, etc... We can discuss this between the group during the meeting.
Again great to have you.

Best,

Doug
