I too am unbiased but also got feedback from an outside agency we contacted. They indicated the other groups representative visited, was very professional and extremely client oriented.

Making it clear that getting portraits for those in need was the most important factor without mentioning our group at all.

They further indicated that shortly after the visit, they received a call from our representative distancing us from the others.

This left them confused and asking “Isn’t this a charitable cause?” “Shouldn’t they be helping each other?”

Really, if in the end if the client goes home happy with the results, I don’t think they’ll care if it was processed on a Mac or a PC!!!!

Wow. With all respect Paul, and being completely unbiased, I think that Ed was just trying to be assuring to our members that it would not affect our event and that everyone is doing a food job. I don't think he meant to single out or put anyone down. I didn't get that from his message.... Keep up the good work everyone!

OK.  This has to stop.

Ed’s comment on this page regarding the professionalism of the other local Help Portrait group is unwarranted and unprofessional.

More, I just got word that someone from our group has been calling local social agencies not just to distance us from Andrew Livitt’s similar efforts, but more disturbing, also cautioning that he “may not be as professional as us”.

Barring extraordinary circumstances, photographers should not be disparaging other photographers.  This is just plain wrong!

Ed, you’ve indicated in past meetings that you’ve never seen Andrew’s work.  How can you possibly publicly question his professionalism without ever looking at the guy’s work?  And despite your avoidance to divulge, I know you’re aware that he’s been running a Help Portrait group a year longer than us.  What does that do to your credibility?

The guy is making an honest effort to help people.   I’ve recently heard feedback from agency staff who described him as sincere and very professional in his approach.   Who are we to criticize or obstruct him in any way?  If you have good reason, let’s hear it.

We should be supporting his effort to bring happiness to individuals and families, no?  Isn’t that what Help Portrait is all about?  If you don’t want to help the guy or give him credit in any way, at least please stop the sniping and undermining.

Before you reply, take a deep breath, set your egos aside, really think this one through, and ask yourselves; just what’s going on here?

BTW Gerry (as you’ve probably surmised), the other local Help Portrait is organized by North Bay photographer Andrew Livitt.  You can see his work at:

http://andrewlivittphotography.com/index.html

His group doesn’t require ‘nominations’ or appointments.  Subjects aren’t even required to give their names.  He’s not looking for glory.  He’s just trying to make a difference to people who’d like to have a portrait.

We really owe this guy an apology.  Now please let’s get off this horse and get back to the business of making Help Portrait -- no matter who’s running it -- a success.

Apologies to the rest of the group for stirring up the compost here, but this situation left such a bad taste in my mouth I felt compelled to speak up.  I’d do the same for any one of you.

Respectfully,

Paul

Gerald

Anyone can start a Help Portrait event any time they want to We started last year since no one else was doing it and with your help and everyone we did a super job. I am sure the other group will not be a large or as professional.

Thanks for coming! Hope I got you all.

Sorry for the delay in getting this out. I was out of town last week.

Place: Chicago Cafe
Date: October 30th 2011.

Ed opened the meeting and  asked John Wallace to review the nomination forms, list of agencies. The letter sent to agencies was reviewed. Responses are coming in. 24 confirmed as of today. Expect 60-65. A spreadsheet of all nominees should be ready for the next meeting.

John W needs text re. availability of taxi. Since the meeting John O has contacted U Need a Cab. They will provide a van for the day complete with driver and fuel, no charge. Text was sent to JW.

The complaint by one of the parents in relation to a photograph published by Bay Today was reviewed. No action required. Permission of mother was obtained.

Section Captains will be same as last year. TWG on board. Marnie mentioned the name tags will be redone, this time without dates so they will be re-usable. John Powers on board for music. Make up and dance arranged. Mike Levitan on board for lighting and big screen TV etc.

Reminder. Ben Cote will contact NNMML to see if they are interested in producing an HD video. May be able to get a grant.

Blanche Helene will find out where the window covering fabric has been stored.

Time slots from 8.30 till 3.00pm.

Dave Palangio to liaise with Brandi Cramer.

Ed advised that he is working on some screens for the waiting areas with photos of last years event mounted on them.

This year's help Portrait will be dedicated to Dent's memory. Jacob will prepare some material for this.

Food donations should be lined up as soon as possible. Same as last year. Topper's Pizza, Tim Hortons, East Side Marios.

Sean O'Halloran advised there were approximately 150 sheets of photo paper left. Will probably need another pack. A separate meeting will be held to discuss equipment and supplies.

John to look into flower decorations from Barry Pond.

The establishment of another HP group in North Bay was discussed. They are holding their event on 10th December. It was decided they should be able to operate separately. Bill Ferguson was concerned this may cause some confusion and suggested they be encouraged to join us. Jacob volunteered to liaise with the other group.

Bill Ferguson drew everybody's attention to the Help Portrait Website. Help Portrait has some new initiatives this year and seeks to collect photographs of participants with their permission. It was decided there would be no changes to our program.

Next meeting November 13th. 2.00 pm Chicago Cafe.

Any errors or omissions let me know.

Johnny O.
