What's up Everybody.  OMG.  It is that time of year again and I just read an email from Jerrome that he is living in France and therefore we are running late for the organizing of the NYC Help-Portrait Event for 2011.  I am committed to organizing a meeting for anyone interested in volunteering for the event.  I have led one of the biggest NYC HP events the last two years and I hope that this year we can get a site in every borough!  I will be setting up a meeting for next week, Tuesday at 6pm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

El Puente

211 South 4th Street

Brooklyn, NY 11211

Between (South 4th and Roebling St.)

Everyone interested, hit up this forum and let us know if you are interested in helping.

BTW, sorry I have been out of the loop.  We just had our second baby!

Peace,

-Will

Yes.  it's 20 kids so we only need  4 volunteers.

Hi.  What is the best way to hear what happened at Tuesday's meeting.  Sorry I wasn't able to come. Update pretty please?

Thanks,

Rima

Steve

Are there any location in queens?

Is anyone running this discussion?

As of today, November 13, 2011, five people have updated info for 2011 on the NYC spreadsheet.  Unless people sign up and unless leaders step forward and find NYC locations and get moving really quickly, this will fizzle and disappear.

(I'm doing what I can to be a cheerleader - I wish I had time to form a group and plan a shoot, but my job is more than full time and I just can't do more than I'm doing.)

I agree. We need leaders to find locations.

Maryana, I looked into Alzheimer's day programs a bit and found this list of 15 locations in Manhattan.  I was thinking a dementia day program might be receptive to help portrait.  I don't know the specific programs, but this site has descriptions.    (There are programs in every boro)

As I keep lamenting, I don't have the time to devote to planning a shoot, but I'd certainly like to participate in a shoot.  (I'm basically a street photographer, so my thing is documenting the shoot.)   Karen Lenz is is looking to do something, too, and contacted me.  (We'd met at a workshop some years ago.)  Maybe  you two want to contact each other?

I participated in a big shoot two years ago (16 of us, a real feat of organization for those in charge) and it was fantastic.  Here's a video someone shot of that day - you'll see that one of the tv stations even covered. it.

And Kendra (see above) put together a shoot that ran very smoothly - a small shoot, but so satisfying, and the participants really appreciated it.

I guess there's nobody in charge this year here in NYC, so if you want to do something, you need to step forward and figure out how to do it - and get in touch with people who have past experience.

The old spreadsheet has the organizers' names from the past - and the 16 people who put together the 2009 shoot I helped with are listed at the end of the video. And their names, too, and contact info are on the spreadsheet.

For some reason 2009 came together beautifully - hundreds of people participated in projects all over NYC, all the boros.

I'll happily participate on the day of the shoot and I'll give what input I can to whoever plans.  But I wasn't an organizer in the past - so there's a limit to what first-hand knowledge I can contribute.

Good luck!

How can I get on the spreadsheet? I would like to talk to Leaders and get info on how to set up shooting events.

Thanks.

November 30, 2011:

In reply to the people asking how to get involved, this is all I know:

The spreadsheet data seems to have been deleted.

The person in charge of the whole day seems to be Will, so you need to send him an email.  As far as I can tell,  only three events are planned and have leaders at this point, and each needs a makeup person.

No more events are currently planned for nyc and no more photographers or other volunteers seem to be needed for the three events that have leaders.

According to Will's messages here, anyone who wants to become a leader and organize something is encouraged to do so. But without a spreadsheet, without any idea of how to organize something, without a central location for communicating (several scattered locations include facebook, google plus, and a few on this help-portrait site) that's a big challenge.

Hello,

Where is the spreadsheet? Is there a Website? Would you like to hook up and talk about organizing a shoot?

Best,

Mary

Hello all,

So, not many people showed up to Tuesday's meeting.

As of right now we have TWO sites that I know of that are participating in the HP event in NYC.

Brooklyn--(Williamsburg)

El Puente

211 South 4th Street

(Lead Organizer -me- WillSalomon)

Manhattan, NY, NY

The Children Incarnation Center

142 Audubon Avenue • New York, NY

(Lead Organizer Kendra Alexis)

It would be great to see the other boroughs represented.

Anyone in the Bronx, Queens that are interested in being a lead to organize for your community, please let me know.

What we Need:

1. Other sites in communities of need identified and that they are willing to be host for a site.

2. Someone who is willing to organize the logistics and overall project management of that respective site.

3.Photographers.

4. Make up artisit

5. General volunteers to make sure everything goes smoothly.

I will be updating or create a new spreadsheet.  I need to know who are the active volunteers for this year.

In the mean time, if you signed up on the spreadsheet, please put (2011) by your name so we know that you are volunteering for this year.

More to come soon.

Thanks,

-Will
