Suggestion: clear out groups from previous years
I would love to help with this project but I can't find anything that seems "active" in the Kansas City area. Doing a search yields several groups, but most of them are from previous years. The "recent activity" date is mostly useless because the most recent posts are just people asking about this year.
I would suggest that you clear out (or archive) the groups each year and let people start new groups for the new year. This would help in finding actual, active groups for a city. Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk follows a similar event/city structure and the way they handle groups works very well in my opinion. Maybe something to look at for next year.

I've had the same problem finding a group in my area. I missed out last year because I left comments on a couple different groups in my area, then never heard back from any of them. :-(

Hello!
Thank you for your input. I spent hours last night going through every group and have removed inactive groups! Hopefully that helps you.
